Project

African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences

Since January 2022, the project "The African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences" has been implemented at Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (HSWT). The African-Bavarian Alliance is funded by the Bavarian State Chancellery as part of the "Bavarian Africa Package" and represents an important part of Network Africa and the university's internationalisation strategy. The project aims to establish a network between the HSWT and partner institutions from Ethiopia, Senegal, Tunisia and South Africa (Gauteng & Western Cape), which are focus countries of Bavaria in its cooperation with Africa. The "African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences" aims to act as a lively exchange platform for practice-based teaching in the life sciences and to raise awareness of the benefits and acceptance of applied teaching among all participating project partners. Within the "African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences", in addition to the dialogue between the partner regions, the exchange between the institutions within the individual countries also plays an important role.

Thematically, the "African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences" focuses on the exchange of applied teaching in various fields of the life sciences (e.g. agriculture, horticulture, food technology, agribusiness, land use planning, biotechnology), whereby the importance of agricultural value chains is emphasised. In all the above-mentioned disciplines, the embedding of climate-relevant issues in applied teaching is discussed, making the cross-cutting issue of "climate change and climate change adaptation" an important substantive focus of the Alliance. Within the framework of the "African-Bavarian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences", aa variety of virtual and face-to-face events (conferences, seminars, workshops etc.) are implemented. The events will be flanked by trips by HSWT members to the partner countries for training and contact initiation purposes. The project builds on the successfully completed "Bavarian-Ethiopian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences", which was implemented at the HSWT from 2019 to 2021. Within the "Bavarian-Ethiopian Alliance for Applied Life Sciences", a network with Ethiopian partners from higher education, industry and the public sector was established and the implementation of applied teaching was discussed in numerous events.
