Water-Hub Project

The Integrated Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus initiative is led by the Water-Energy-Food-Nexus Group, at the Chair of Urban Water Systems Engineering, Technical University of Munich. In the Water-Hub project, they collaborate with the Western Cape Government, the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA & DP), and the University of Cape Town (UCT), South Africa and is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection. The primary goal is to explore suitable nature-based technologies and demonstrate their feasibility in the Western Cape, South Africa, for the reclamation of contaminated water and recovery of other resources in the context of informal settlements to improve water, energy and food security. The project's Nexus approach begins with WEFE considerations but also incorporates other pertinent sectors such as waste management and ecosystem services, aiming for a fair transition to a Circular Economy.
